Medications from the past.

This was sent to me the other day and I am glad that our modern Pharmaceutical companies have come a long way, with remedies for good health, from this. ... and we worried about giving our childern asprin!

A bottle of Bayers heroin.
Between 1890 and 1910 was sold as non-addictive substitutefor morphine. It was also used to treat children with a strong cough.

Cocaine toothache drops.
Very popular for children in 1885. Not only they relieved the pain, they made the children happy!

A paperweight promoting C.F. Boehringet & Soehene (Germany)
They were proud of being the biggest producers in the world of products containing Quinine and cocaine.

Stickney
I'm sure this would make the little ones sleep well ( not only opium but 46% alcohol.)
5 days old - 5 drops? ( goodness me!)

Enjoy your week
Hugs
Carolyn

  1. Thank you very much for your visit and birthday wishes!

Haha! Look at all those remedies! Quite amazing that we did not have so many addicts running around. A much different time, looks best in sepia and black white.

  3. Scary thought dear Carolyn! Although when I was nursing we always packed noses with ribbon gauze impregnated with a cocaine solution to treat epistaxis - & I'm not that old! Now I think certain folk just omit the gauze!!!

  5. no wonder folks didn't mind having 13 kids in the "olden days" ...hahhaha....obviously it didn't hurt them either.... there are plenty of them still around and healthy while modern people are falling like flies at horribly early ages.

  6. How funny! Can you imagine giving a child (or an adult for that matter) such things? It's amazing how time changes things!!!

    Blessings,

  7. Oh my word! No wonder people used to kid about taking cough syrup and old medicines. I remember my great grandma would say how a cousin of hers loved her cough medicine! I really love those old bottles and labels though - so pretty.
    Happy day, Carolyn.

  9. Hi Millie,

Yes, scary and have their nose and septum collaspe.
You would have have been a lovely nurse.

    Hi Dolores,

What I couldn't get over was the age that they gave these medicines, to very young children.

    Hi Vee,

They did have big families back then. My father was the youngest of 11 kids. His poor Mum and Dad!

    Hi Kim,

I am so glad that with time, these things have changed.

    Hi Tracie,

That is so funny your Grandma loving her cough medicine. haha.
I love the old bottles and labels too and would be fun to find some.

    Hi Jennifer,

Glad that times have changed and we know that these things would be addictive and so bad now.
