Olive season is upon us
It's that time of the year again, harvesting of our olives.
As the weather was a beautiful blue sky, I went out to make a start filling the crate so I could then transport them to the local press.
As they were pressing today, I would need to have them out there by 1 pm, so early this morning I got out and worked really hard to pick them off the trees. As it is a bumper crop, this year we will be doing this for a few days more, so that is what is going to occupy our time this week.
Olives should be processed soon after harvest because storing them diminishes the quality and no longer than three days from the time they are picked. We have twelve trees on our property, of different varieties ... some olives are dark black and others a pretty light green and blended together make for a lovely oil
Picking is time consuming but its all worth it to have your very own cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.
Now I am feeling very tired and will sleep well tonight.

It's wonderful that you make your own olive oil, dear Carolyn. It must taste delicious. We have two olive trees in the garden. Last year they didn't have a single olive but this year there are lots growing. I don't know if it will be enough to make oil. If not I will preserve them.

Yum, yum, yummy! People who buy olive oil in grocery stores have no idea what the real deal tastes like. We bring ours from Jerusalem and it is deeeeeelicious! :)

DeleteWe get an average of about 12 bottles - not sure how many this year. By the look of the crop on the trees, hopefully may get more.

It sounds like you're going to be very busy this week but definitely worth it in the end. How long will the oil you make from the crop last?

DeleteWe tried preserving the olives in brine but they were not very nice and the oil seems to be the best way to use them

Indeed, feeling tired but also very satisfied. That's also how I felt when I went to bed after having tackled my 36 photo albums. Wow, it looked overwhelming this mega task but I'm so very happy I've done so. Pieter too enjoys viewing them organized by year and country and on the screen in a larger format.

This is such a beautiful post Carolyn. I love the images of the olives, daisies and the blue sky, and it’s nice to know what you’ve been up to. I can understand how tired you are, but as you say it must be so nice to have your own extra-virgin olive oil.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve just had drainage put down in the garden because it floods when we get heavy rain. The two young men who did the work were very careful, but it was impossible not to make a mess. We didn’t mind as we were very glad to get the job done, but it has left quite a bit of sorting out to do. It is very tiring work, but it will be worth it in the end.
