The Obliteration Room

Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary artist, was born in 1929 and is obsessed with Polka dots.
This popular, well loved artist, set up an Installation recently at the Auckland Art Gallery and my daughter and I went along to have a look.

Beginning as a stark white interior, the space is transformed into a bright, happy and colourful place.
Each visitor to the Exhibition is given a page of brightly, coloured stickers of various sizes and then placing the stickers everywhere to cover up all the white background, to a plethora of rainbow coloured dots.

This was a fun place to visit, especially for children to experience and engage with the Artwork.

Bright, cheerful and eccentric, Yayoi is believed to have influenced contemporaries such as Andy Warhol, collaborated with Louis Vuitton in 2012 and being named one of the worlds 100 most influential people in Time Magazine.
Have you been lucky enough to visit any of her Exhibitions?

If everyone would look for that uniqueness
then we would have a very colourful world

Enjoy your week

  13. Whoa! That's wild! I went to an ice cream parlor last year that had a very small room off to the side. You could take mini post-it notes, write something on it, and place it anywhere in the room, just like with the polka dot stickers. Of course, being post-its and not stickers, the effect was not quite the same and post its kept falling onto the floor and onto the backs of people's clothes. Looks like it was a super fun exhibition!
