The old wine boxes

I have a few wine boxes that I picked up for a song, but wanted to give them that old look as if they had been around since the 1900's.
All you will need to get this look, is a steel wool pad,  a glass jar, some malt vinegar and a paint brush.

Take the steel wool and cut it up into small pieces with a pair of scissors, put it in the jar and cover with vinegar and leave for 24 hours. Most of the steel wool will dissolve in the liquid.

Then brush the solution on the wood and as soon as the solution touches the wood,  you will notice a change and get the old vintage weathered effect.
This really does not smell very pleasant, so is a good idea to do this outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine.
These boxes are so useful for storage and that is what I am going to do now, have a tidy up of some of my supplies.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and I hope all your plans and dreams come true.
Hugs
Carolyn

  3. What an interesting technique...I had never heard of cutting up steel wool and having it dissolve in the vinegar. I will have to try that Carolyn. I love your boxes...they turned out beautifully, although I liked the "before" too!
Wooden boxes are a rare commodity around here now. Wine comes in cardboard boxes now.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

Julia, the answer to your question...
I left the boxes outdoors for two days and then brought them in and you could not smell the nasty smell of vinegar anymore.
