They took the money and fled!

Flickr
A Rotorua couple who fled the Country after receiving millions of dollars in a banking error, told a friend they were going on a holiday before disappearing.
It is believed they had applied to Westpac bank for a $10.000 loan but by an employee error, mistakenly deposited $10 million into their account.
The unamed couple believed to be Korean Leo Gao and his Kiwi girlfriend have not been seen since.
Rotorua police and Interpol began an investigation.

Finders Keepers? I think not!
If $10 million turned up in your account, could you keep it?

I know what I would do, you know the money is not yours and I would let the bank know of the error.
They've taken funds that they're not entitled to, that are not theirs. They have effectively become thieves, and will probably not get away with it.

  1. I wouldn't keep it, I would let the bank know of the error too. I wouldn't want to live my life looking over my shoulder and knowing that one day I may be caught and would have to spend along time in jail. I also think it's wrong and I wasn't raised to be dishonest.....but if someone gave me 10 million, I would definitly go on vacation somewhere fun!!! : ) hugs, Jennifer

  2. Hi Carolyn...

Oh, I heard this story on the news. I am sure it won't take long to find them...but who knows? I do hope they catch them though...

  3. Hi Jennifer and Nancy,

I agree that Honesty is the best policy and to be looking over your shoulder all the time and to think you might spend a long time in jail,
    is not worth the trouble.

  4. I bank with Worstpac (as MOTH calls them) & I'd keep the lot based on previous traumatic banking experiences I've had with them! No, only joking but it would be tempting to do a disappearing job. Maybe I'd call the Bank & let them know that for $1m. they could have the balance returned, no questions asked.

What MOTH couldn't figure out though is that he took his defacto Mother-In-Law with him on the run as well - now that really puts the guy's sanity into question! I feel a movie coming on about this story.
Happy weekend to you dear Carolyn.

  5. Hi Millie,

Worstpac..have never heard it called that before.
The banks are all pretty awful at times.
I would hate to be the person that added the extra 00's!

Yes, a movie would be great.
I wonder if they will ever be able to track them down?
I suppose they could easily live a new life in China with so many millions of people living there.

    Hugs

  6. Oh, Carolyn, I completely agree. They may not have had guns, but they are thieves just the same. It would be terrible to live on the lam, never being able to go home or contact family again. In this day and age with technology as it is, I'm sure they will be caught.

  7. I wouldn't be able to give up everything I know in life just too keep the money. If you had to run and hide to keep the money, you would have to give up your entire life and family and not come back. Too much heartache just to be rich. I had not heard of this story.

They will get caught for sure.

  8. Hi Carolyn,
I saw this story on the news and had to laugh the way the newscaster led the story, I thought they were going to do the right thing, then they panned to the gas station (I think) that they owned and the whole thing was vacant. I would definitely tell the bank but know for a few seconds my brain would take my to my petite apartment in France by the sea. Happy weekend.

  9. Oh My Gosh Carolyn!

I would hope this couple would THINK! And do the RIGHT thing! Gosh, I don't even know what to say about this...it does sound like a movie. Karma! Is all I can say.

Although...If someone gave me the money like Jennifer said...THAT is another STORY! Oh BOY what fun that would BE!!!

May you have a nice weekend!

  11. Hi Bella,

I heard the Mother of the daughter pleading with her, to give herself up on the news last night.
I suppose on the spur of the moment they probably did not think of the consequences.

    Hi Carol,

I am the same, just not worth it
    for the money.

    Hi Tracie,

A petite apartment in France near the sea, I am with you there and what a dream that would be!

    Hi Miss Kris,

What fun that would be if you were given it rightly or won the lottery, now that would be so different!

    Hi Lyn,

thank you so much and just going over to visit your blog and pick up my award.

    Hugs

  14. I wouldn't (and couldn't) keep it. I could not enjoy money that I knew was not mine. It is nothing more than stealing.

  16. Carolyn true story:

I have 1300 in my savings account before tax season last year (I am getting chemo and kind of out of it.)

I am expecting a refund and I go to take out 100 doll hairs and the balance is 130,000. Of course I thought what the heck? This was a Friday so talk to the bank in the morning and it was a mistake.

It looked so good on my balance sheet.

    I could never do that.

    Love Renee xoxoxo

You know when it is not your money as much as it would be nice to have a big windfall.

  18. I read about this in the newspaper the other day. An online newspaper I believe; probably the Daily Mail out of Britain. When I read it my first thought was, how unbelievably stupid of those two. How on earth did they think they could ever ever get away with it. Instead of having a good laugh about it with friends and then notifiying the bank, they instead let greed overrule them.

They will be caught, I'm sure...its only a matter of time.

  19. They must have not been thinking straight, I would say.
They are said to be in HongKong so it will be only a matter of time.
The money will eventually run out.
